Cascading impact of unnecessary or low-value care services

By Suman Pattnaik

Research suggests that almost 30 percent of all healthcare in the United States is unnecessary or wasteful.

In this whitepaper, we explore the unintended consequences of unnecessary medical testing and treatment and offer suggestions for patients and clinicians to reduce the potential for these harms without compromising care.

The Milliman MedInsight® Health Waste Calculator is one such tool that is designed to help healthcare organizations leverage value-based principles by identifying wasteful services defined by national initiatives such as the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and other published literature. Milliman MedInsight defines a cascading event as a follow-up or clinical event resulting from low-value services.

In this study, we used Milliman MedInsight’s Health Waste Calculator to identify individuals with cascade events after a low-value care service and further analyzed utilization patterns and costs for 2022.
