Missouri Health Value Collaborative (MHVC) is a St. Louis-based nonprofit regional health improvement collaborative that brings together self-insured employers, providers, and payers to improve healthcare quality and affordability across Missouri. Its four-person analytics team produces the population health scorecards, utilization reports, and market share analyses that give self-insured employers a clearer picture of the populations they cover. MHVC set out to expand its reporting into new regions and answer more complex questions about community health without adding headcount. By moving its analytics to the Milliman MedInsight Platform and Innovation Portal, the team automated slow manual work, sharpened accuracy, and freed its analysts to focus on the insights that drive savings decisions.

The challenge

MHVC needed a faster, more flexible analytics environment. With only four analysts, the team could not easily absorb multiple large projects that demanded extensive manual calculation, so more complex, high-value questions from key stakeholders were often set aside. MHVC needed to expand its scorecard and reporting to more regions while delivering deeper, more actionable insight into community health.

The solution

MHVC implemented the MedInsight Platform and Innovation Portal, replacing manual data extraction steps with automated workflows.

• The MedInsight Data Confidence Model — a structured process that combines formal steps, tools, and peer review — helps ensure the underlying data is accurate and reliable.
• Incorporating MedInsight advanced analytics directly into the reporting process — including Health Cost Guidelines (HCG) benchmarks, Chronic Condition Hierarchical Groups (CCHG), and MARA risk scoring — gave the team validated reference points for measuring utilization and identifying cost drivers across the population.
• The team began using the Innovation Portal for its population health scorecards, boosting both capacity and confidence.

The impact

With MedInsight, MHVC dramatically reduced the effort behind its most demanding analyses — completing the one to three data extractions per measure for 45 to 60 scorecard measures in roughly an hour, a task that used to take one or two full days. The tools also streamlined peer review, cutting review time in half while improving calculation accuracy and reducing the risk of human error. The result is faster, more reliable analytics that shorten the path from signal to savings decision, and the confidence to pursue more ambitious questions for stakeholders.

Looking ahead, MHVC plans to do even more with the MedInsight Platform and Innovation Portal, incorporating additional data sources and demographic detail to add another level of rigor to the transparency it provides healthcare purchasers working to control costs and improve care.
